What a "website rank" actually is
A website rank is a single integer between 1 and ~10,000,000 that estimates a domain's position in the global popularity / authority hierarchy of the entire web. Rank #1 is the most popular domain on the internet (google.com). Rank #1,000,000 is at the bottom of the recognizably-ranked web — beyond that, sites are mostly indistinguishable.
This is not Google PageRank (which Google killed publicly in 2016). It's not a Google SERP ranking position (those are per-keyword, not domain-level). It's a global authority/popularity ordering.
How website ranks are calculated in 2026
Modern rank calculations combine three signal families:
- Inbound link signals — how many unique domains link to this domain, weighted by THEIR rank
- Traffic signals — actual visitor data from panels (Similarweb) or first-party widgets (FeedPulse Rank for in-network sites)
- Authority decay — older inbound links lose weight over time; freshness matters
Alexa famously used only traffic data (their browser toolbar panel). OpenPageRank uses only the link graph. FeedPulse Rank combines first-party traffic data (for ~tens of thousands of in-network sites) with the link-graph fallback for everyone else — giving real-time precision when we have direct data and reasonable estimates elsewhere.

Why your rank may move suddenly
If your rank jumps or drops a lot, the usual causes are:
- You got a huge backlink (or lost one) — moves the link-graph signal sharply
- A viral moment — temporary traffic spike registered as a step-change in rank
- A competitor got bigger — your rank can drop without anything happening on your end, just because someone passed you
Rank is relative. If the whole web is growing, even a healthy site can drift slightly.
Common rank myths busted
> "Rank affects my Google SERP."
No. SERP ranking is per-keyword. Authority signals like rank correlate with SERP performance but don't directly determine it.
> "Lower rank number is better."
Yes. Rank #1 is the best. Rank #10,000,000 is the worst (still ranked at all).
> "I should obsess over my rank."
No. Rank is a vanity metric. Useful for status, perspective, comparison. Not useful for tactical decisions. For tactical decisions, use Lighthouse score + DA + Trust Score.
